Sunday morning - what to expect

Worship at Glendale Presbyterian Church is held at 10:00am on Sunday mornings. Our parking lot, located at the east side of the building, provides ample parking. As you enter the building through the parking lot entrance, a Greeter will offer you a worship bulletin and a friendly smile. Make your way down the hall to the Narthex where you will find an Usher to help you find a comfortable seat and answer any questions. You are welcome to fill out a blue prayer request card which can be lifted up aloud in prayer by the Pastor or Liturgist during the service. Worship begins with announcements and a musical prelude. Our Sunday morning worship services typically last about an hour.

communion

Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of every month with bread (served by tongs) and small cups of grape juice. Prepackaged elements are also available. All are welcome at God’s table.

what to wear

There is no formal dress code at GPC. Wear what you feel comfortable in. You will see folks dressed in everything from casual to Sunday best.

family & children

Families and children are welcomed and embraced at GPC. We have a "PrayerGround” in the front of the sanctuary with books and coloring materials to engage our children as they participate in worship. We also have a nursery and Sunday School available.

accessibility

Our church parking lot offers several accessible parking spaces. There are stairs to enter our main entrance, leading to an automatic sliding front door. For those not able to climb stairs, the elevator entrance is located on the north side of the building, near the accessible parking spaces. You may enter the sanctuary through the North Hall, which has no stairs.

current covid-19 protocols

Currently, we are now mask optional if you are fully vaccinated and are able to social distance. This includes our church members and guests and those who are in the building for community gatherings/meetings. We are encouraging social distancing including in the sanctuary where every other pew is currently not being used. There is, however, no number limit on participants in church and community meetings as well as in worship.

We have returned to having fellowship time after worship service.

We encourage hand washing and have hand sanitizer available at the entrance and other locations.

“O come, let us sing to the Lord.”

Music at GPC

Music helps to evoke and enhance worshippers’ consciousness of the reality and grace of God. The voices of the children “making a joyful noise,” the offerings of our youth and adult musicians, and the contemplative music from the piano and pipe organ all play a part in providing the music that is so integral to our worship experience.

Congregational, soloists & ensembles, the bell choir, the children and adult chancel choirs, guest musicians, and other instrumental solos add to the foundations of piano and pipe organ to make for a rich diversity of musical worship.  GPC intentionally seeks to offer opportunities for our members and children to participate in worship by offering their musical talents regardless if you are young pianist or a professional musician.

The Chancel Choir sings weekly during the Sunday morning worship from September through May. A large repertoire of classic as well as more contemporary songs is enjoyed. Cantatas are offered in worship as highlights of the Lent and Advent seasons. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 and you are welcome to join in the singing!

The GPC Bell Choir involves ringers of all ages and skills in a lovely, fun, and accessible musical experience. The Bell Choir participates regularly in Sunday morning worship. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 5:45 to 6:15.

The Children’s and Youth Choirs sing occasionally in regular Sunday worship services.

Liturgical Arts

Liturgical Arts at GPC

Liturgical Arts engage our senses to enhance our worship. The Liturgical Arts group creates materials that may use any or all of our senses – vision, hearing, touch, taste, and smell – so we can better understand God’s message. While most of the work is visual, other senses are incorporated, if possible. The Liturgical Arts committee decorates the church and its grounds based on the liturgical season, scriptures, or hymns, sometimes connecting scripture to current events, such as the pandemic, crime, or water quality.  This creative group brainstorms ideas, and then creates images to represent the idea symbolically or abstractly.

The Liturgical Arts committee inspire and create while enjoying working together. Sometimes the entire congregation from the youngest to the oldest member is invited to participate in completing the work. Liturgical Arts on the grounds may also invite members of the public to contribute to the design. Anyone with creative ideas is welcome to join the group. Contact Chuck Niesen with questions, comments, or a desire to attend meetings.
