Liturgical Arts

World Communion Sunday

Children of the World form a circle suspended over the communion table. This display symbolizes the truth that God's people are never separated.

Fifth Sunday in Lent and a Baptism

A baptismal banner was made for this and future baptisms. The dove represents the Holy Spirit. Long streamers suggest moving water - the waters of baptism.

Easter Sunday

A three-dimensional sun is made of papier mache with the help of Kids on a Mission, and is attached to the wooden cross in front of the church. The sun symbolizes the bright beginning afforded us by Christ's sacrifice and resurrection and reminds us to set our sights above.

Day of Pentecost

Several paper banners with multiple handprints were created in collaboration with Kids on a Mission. The red and yellow handprints suggest the flames of Pentecost and are hung in the sanctuary on this day of remembering that if we open our hands with love, they will be filled with good things.

The Story of Noah's Ark

A plywood ark adds a new dimension to the telling of a classic Bible story. Having been asked to bring their stuffed animals to church on this Sunday, the children in the congregation were invited to place the animals on the ark when they came to the front of the sanctuary for their scripture conversation with the pastor.

Installation of Artwork at the Presbytery Center

For several Sundays at GPC, copper wire was used to illustrate scriptures or suggest a concept. To portray God's relationship with God's children, a parent and child's hands were sculpted for Father's Day. God and Adam's pointing hands from the Sistine Chapel were illustrated for Psalm 8. Many hands reaching up to touch the hem of Jesus' robe were suspended to illustrate a story from the book of Mark. A larger version was commissioned and hung permanently at the Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy Center.

Advent, Christmas and Epiphany

To expand our wooden nativity set during Advent, church members created portraits of themselves preparing for the coming of the Christ child. These portraits were mounted on bases. We added figures each Sunday and moved them progressively toward the stable. All of 'us' arrived there on Christmas Eve.
